Looking for a way to connect that isn’t another Zoom call? How about a mailbox full of zines made by local members of your LGBTQ community? 

PNW zinesters Elijah Janka and Calum MacQuilly are hosting a mail-based zine exchange for up to 15 members of Under the Rainbow! We’ll start with an online workshop introducing the exchange and teaching a simple zine layout using a single sheet of paper. Interested attendees will register for the exchange, then will have 8 days to make and submit a zine. Elijah and Calum will print and assemble copies of each zine and mail you a complete set! 

• Participation is free! All printing and mailing costs are covered by Under the Rainbow and the Edmonds Library, part of the Sno-Isle Libraries. 

• Participants must be 18 or older due to complications around permissions, sharing home addresses, content restrictions, etc. If there is interest among younger members, an all-ages exchange can be planned in the future.

• Participation will be capped at 15 people to keep the printing and mailing logistics manageable. If it’s successful, we can do another exchange!

• You will need to provide a mailing address to the event organizers in order to receive your zines. This address will be kept private and will not be shared with other participants. 

• Layout: All zines for this exchange will need to use the one-page layout taught in the workshop. We’ll be printing and assembling 125 of these and need them to be a consistent format!

• How to send in your zine: If you make your zine digitally, you can send in a pdf. If you make a zine by hand, you can submit a scan or well-lit photos and we can format them in Photoshop for printing (we’ll send you a copy of the file as well so you can keep printing and sharing your work). If you need access to a scanner, Rickey, Librarian at the Edmonds Library, can help and we will provide the contact information at the workshop.

• Content: Many people find healing and empowerment through making zines to tell personal stories about topics like trauma and survivorship. However, zines on these subjects are best saved for festivals or online shops where people can check the description and opt in to read about issues that can be acutely triggering. While there are no formal content restrictions for this exchange, we ask you to be mindful of the other participants when selecting a topic. Searching for zines on Etsy is a great place to find inspiration and connect with the zine community! 

Calum MacQuilly (he/him)

CALUM is a queer Celtic zinester from the Pacific Northwest. He enjoys making zines that explore his personal and cultural past and imagine queer futures. 

 Elijah Janka (he/him)

ELIJAH is a lifelong artist & storyteller, and a big nerd who loves D&D, comics, teriyaki, and folklore.   He received an AFA in drawing and printmaking from North Seattle College in 2018 and was a first place winner in the 2020 WA State Zine Contest. 

Under the Rainbow

Under the Rainbow is a branch of the Edmonds Neighborhood Action Coalition that serves the local LGBTQIA+ community. Under the Rainbow offers a variety of programming including storytelling, a writer’s group, family game night, and queer movie night. 	July 10 Attend the zine-making workshop! This workshop will be held over Zoom on Saturday, July 10 at 2:00 PM. Links to the workshop will also be posted on the Sno-Isle Library website and Facebook page, and on the Under the Rainbow Facebook page.
	July 10 – 12 Register for the exchange! Details on registration and submission will be provided at the workshop. Participation is limited to the first 15 people to register to keep printing and mailing logistics manageable.
	July 10 – 17 Make your zine and send it in!
	July 18 Last day to submit a scanned copy or pictures of your zine! If you need access to a scanner, staff at the Edmonds Library can help! We will provide librarian Rickey’s contact info at the workshop.
	July 23 Check your mail! Elijah and Calum will print, assemble, and mail out a full set of zines for each participant so you’ll get a copy of each zine submitted!
